Your True Age May be Revealed by Your Pee
While we may tell ourselves “age is just a number” to numb the pain of aging, researchers in China believe they have found a way to determine how old we truly are by analyzing a biomarker found in urine. A new study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience suggests that this biomarker can not only determine a person’s biological age but can also assist in predicting an individual’s risk of age-related diseases, IFLScience.com reported. Despite how a person may appear, or how many years they’ve been alive, a person’s biological age is how old a person is on a cellular level – which is based on genetics, lifestyle, and environment.
According to this study, biomarker 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro guanosine (more commonly referred to at 8-oxoGsn) increases in urine as people get older, “making it a suitable biomarker for biological age.” The researchers analyzed urine samples from over 1,200 Chinese residents between the ages of 2 and 90 and found that 8-oxoGsn began to increase at age 20, and continued to increase over time.
