Feces Transplants effect weight?
One woman who was treated with the recurrent C. difficile infection was successfully treated by this procedure, but oddly went from normal weight to being obese in a rapid manner. The patient had never been overweight before until after the transplant. The donor of the feces was also overweight. Those suffering from the infection can experience a wide range of nasty symptoms such as intense diarrhea, abdominal cramps to life-threatening complications like severe bowel swelling.
However, the woman was also infection with another species called elicobacter pylori, a common bacterium that can also cause similar symptoms to C. difficile infection. She was prescribed multiple medications, but it did not fix the problem. She selected her daughter as a donor once all else failed. The woman was 136 pounds, and her daughter weighed 140 pounds but became overweight shortly after. 16 Month later the woman gained 34 pounds and was on the line of becoming obese. “We’re questioning whether there was something in the fecal transplant, whether some of those ‘good’ bacteria we transferred may have an impact on her metabolism in a negative way,” case report author Colleen Kelly said in a statement.
