First Ocean Cleaning System
Since tons of waste are thrown, away every year, it doesn’t break down easily. This is really bad for environments. There is about 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating through oceans right now, which threatens marine organisms because they can accidentally ingest it or get tangled up in it. One 20 year believe in a solution. Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup Boyan Slat , has announced the organization will be releasing the first system that can remove plastic waste from oceans. The design will float, and will be able to handle around currents.
The plastic and other debris will be picked up by a conveyer belt. It will be the longest floating structure in the ocean. “Taking care of the world’s ocean garbage problem is one of the largest environmental challenges mankind faces today. Not only will this first cleanup array contribute to cleaner waters and coasts but it simultaneously is an essential step towards our goal of cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” said Slat. “This deployment will enable us to study the system’s efficiency and durability over time.”
