Funding Agencies for Research: Knowing you need funding for research is one thing—knowing where to find it is a whole other story. The type of research your organization plans on conducting will help determine the agencies to which you should apply. Below is a brief list of both federal and private research grant awarding agencies to get you started.
Federal Funding
- Grants.gov – Grants.gov lists discretionary funding opportunities from 26 United States Government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and Department of Energy.
- Grant Resource Center – Run by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, this database includes 2,000 private and federal funding opportunities focused on higher education eligibility.
- SPIN – The Sponsored Programs Information Network claims to be the world’s largest database of sponsored funding opportunities, however an institutional subscription is required for access.
- ResearchResearch – this London-based organization provides international research-funding options.
- Federal Business Opportunities – this database allows users to search more than 33,000 active, federal grant opportunities across multiple agencies.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – The CDC funds both research and non-research projects via various grants and awards. All eligibility criteria can be found in their Funding Opportunities Announcements (FOAs).
