Girl Born With Twin Fetuses
A rare condition called Fetus in fetu is when a baby is born with its deformed parasitic twin inside its own body. An even more unusual example of this condition has been reported. A baby born with two fetuses inside her abdomen. In November 2010 at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a Chinese baby girls was born and was admitted to the neonatal unit because her mother’s ultrasound revealed a strange mass in the child’s abdomen. It was suspected to be a tumor or a hemorrhage.
Two solid masses holding two long bones and a spine were found after a few more days of further examination. At 14 days old, the baby was to be given surgery. The two fetuses had a umbilical cord with a joined placenta. They were believed to be around 10 weeks. The sizes were different but the developmental time was identical. They both had four limbs, spines, developed rib cages. primitive brain tissues, intestines and an anus. Dr. Yu Kai-man thinks that this is the first of its kind in the city. “Since it is impossible for the little girl to have conceived the pregnancy on her own, the fertilization of the twin fetuses, of course, belongs to her parents, which has gone to the wrong place,” he said. In the long run, the baby girl recovered well from the operation.
