Handheld Device Proven To Save Lives
On April 3rd the U.S. FDA released a statement saying they’ve approved a device which treats a variety of painkiller overdoses. The device is an auto injecting machine which could save the lives of patients who’ve overdose on opiates. Drug overdoses are the number one cause of death from injury in the United States. The apparatus injects a drug called naloxone which rapidly reverses the opiates that are in the patient’s blood stream. The device is called Evzio and easily fits in an everyday medicine cabinet. In the past, patient’s suffering from a drug overdose would need a medical professional to inject them with a syringe. Since the Evzio is an auto-inject machine it can be administered by anyone, caregivers, family members, etc. Since 2003 more people have died from a prescription drug overdose related to an opiate, the cocaine and heroin combined. Oddly enough the FDA just approved a painkiller called Zohydro which is 10 times stronger than Vicodin.
