Lab Relocation Checklist

Whether your lab is moving within the same building, across town, or across the country, organizing a move of any size can be a stressful and complicated process. Having a lab relocation checklist and following some of the key steps below will ensure the relocation of your laboratory and lab equipment goes as smoothly as possible. Before you start

Begin by assessing what equipment and materials will need to be moved. Are there biological, radioactive, or chemical components that need to be moved? This makes sure the proper steps and procedures are followed to ensure these items are transported safely. Another thing to consider is will you need all the equipment that is currently in your lab? If not, have you considered selling your used lab equipment?

 

6-8 weeks prior to your move

4 weeks prior to your move

Assess the extent of your relocation and prepare an in-depth inventory of precisely what is being moved to the new space. Also, you’ll want to make sure that your lab’s new home is prepared for all of the equipment that is being moved. Aside from ensuring there is enough space, you want to make sure there are appropriate power sources, storage options, etc.

 

1-2 weeks prior to your move

Prepare your lab equipment for the move. This includes potentially decontaminating any hoods, organizing any chemical waste pick up, and making sure all high-priority work has been completed before your equipment is removed and transported.

 

Final move preparations

Meet with your lab relocation team. We’ll make sure your inventories match, and that the appropriate lab equipment and materials have been properly shut down and packed for safe transport.
