New Bear Species Discovered
Scientists have recently snapped a photo of a rare teddy-bear like animal called the Pika. People haven’t seen this animal in over 20 years. It’s native to the Tianshan Mountains of northwestern China. The reason why this animal is hardly seen is because it is endangered. A 1990’s estimate said that only 2,000 are left. Only 29 has been spotted in over three decades.
Li has spotted the creature before in 1983. He caught one two years later and was declared a new species. It dwells at high elevations between 2,800 and 4,100 meters. It’s eats grasses, herbs, and other mountain plants. “This tiny species could be extinct any time,” Li told CNN. “They don’t exist in the sites where they used to be anymore.” He added: “If it becomes extinct in front of me, I’ll feel so guilty.”
