New Drug Cocktail Developed to Treat Diabetes
Researchers have found that a combination of two drugs could greatly benefit individuals with diabetes according to IFLScience.com. The new drug cocktail enhances the production of beta cells which are essential to the production of insulin.
“Beta cell regeneration is a ‘holy grail’ for the treatment of diabetes,” Dr. Peng Wang associate professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai said. “We are excited to finally have drugs that can induce beta cell proliferation at rates that are likely to be effective in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.”
One of the drugs inhibits an enzyme while the other inhibits transforming growth factor beta superfamily members. This combination causes the beta cells “to proliferate at a surprisingly fast rate.” While this research is promising, there are still a number of hurdles the researchers will have to overcome before this concoction can be tested on human patients.
