The Ocean Cleanup Project Set to Launch Two Years Ahead of Schedule
The Ocean Cleanup project, the brainchild of 23-year-old Dutch inventor and entrepreneur Boyan Slat, has set a Pacific deployment target date for the first half of 2018 – a full two years ahead of schedule New Atlas reported.
Boyan devised a system that is driven by ocean currents which causes the plastic to concentrate itself, “reducing the theoretical cleanup time from millennia to years.”
While the company’s pilot program experienced major system failure within two-months last year in the North Sea, a new design incorporates floating, mobile arms that are weighted down by sea anchors, rather than the the fixed arms of the original design.
Slat claims with this new extraction process half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch can be removed in just 5 years.
