Sea Level risings cause another problem
It has been well known now that the ice in Antarctica is melting and causing the sea levels to rise, but there is also another effect: dips in gravity. The ESA’S Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite has received high-resolution measurements of Antarctica’s gravitational field between November 2009 and June 2012.
Johannes Bouman of the German Geodetic Research Institute led recent analysis that discovered where the ice has been receding, so has the gravity field. GOCE is the first tool sensitive enough to pick up local changes in gravity specific to each individual basin.
