Toxicology Testing Equipment
Toxicology, as defined by the Human Toxicology Project, is βthe study of chemicals that can cause problems for living things.β A wide-ranging field, it examines both natural and professionally developed chemicals and how they affect everything from humans to microbes, and everything in between. Toxicology testing, which typically takes place in a dedicated toxicology lab, is divided into two categoriesβforensic toxicology testing, which is performed postmortem, and clinical toxicology, which include everything from workplace drug testing to athletic drug tests to detect performance-enhancing drugs. Just like any lab, toxicology labs require specific types of equipment in order to operate properly. Starting your own toxicology lab? Consider investing in used and refurbished toxicology testing equipment to stretch your budget further.
- Syringes & needles: to collect blood for chemical analysis and to potentially administer medication
- Catheter: to collect urine for chemical analysis
- Electrocardiography machine: as most toxins have an effect on the heart and heart rate, these machines, also known as ECG machines, are used to read and trace the electrical activity of the heart.
- Electroencephalography machine: similar to an ECG, these machines read and trace the electrical activities of the brain, and are also known as EEG machines.
- Blood gas analyzer: this instrument is used to analyze and quantify the number of toxic gases in the blood.
- Drug Screeners, Chemistry Analyzers, Immunoassay Analyzers
- Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS)
- Ultracentrifuge: these machines can be used to separate particles dispersed in liquid-based on their molecular mass. This can assist in particle identification and recognition.
- Electrophoresis machine: electrophoresis is used to detect and classify serum proteins.
- Chromatography machines: there are several different types of chromatography (gas, planar, paper, etc.) but this technique is used to separate mixtures, chemicals, and substances. The types of machine used is dependant upon the state the mixtures being analyzed is in.
